The Great Debate: Warangal's Size vs. Wikipedia's Claims
A spirited disagreement with my cousin Alok set us on a course to explore Warangal and settle the contentious debate surrounding its size and significance. Alok was convinced that Warangal was nothing more than a backwater town, drawing from his personal visit as evidence. On the other hand, I put my faith in Wikipedia’s assertion, which boldly declared Warangal as the third-largest city in Telangana. The journey to Warangal was our opportunity to uncover the truth, and what we discovered not only surprised us but also ignited a profound curiosity within us.

Administrative Complexity: Warangal Tri-City
Upon closer examination, it became apparent that Warangal’s size was a result of an administrative amalgamation. The authorities had combined three cities into one, creating what is known as the Warangal Tri-City, encompassing Kazipet, Hanamkonda, and Warangal itself. This peculiar arrangement explained the discrepancy between the town’s modest appearance and its status on Wikipedia.
The Kakatiya Dynasty's Vast Realm
Today, Telangana constitutes only a fraction of the extensive Kakatiya kingdom that once reigned supreme. At its zenith, the Kakatiya realm extended from the southern reaches of Tamil Nadu to a substantial portion of Karnataka in the west, and even reached the southwestern tip of Odisha in the east. The heartland of this empire was formed by Andhra and Telangana, and the enduring influence of the Kakatiyas on the region’s medieval structures is unmistakable.
The Ingenious Design of Warangal Fort
Warangal boasts a glorious past, especially during the 13th century when the Kakatiyas shifted their capital from Hanamkonda to Warangal. It was during this time that the formidable Warangal Fort was constructed. This imposing fort consisted of three concentric peripheral walls, with the innermost circular wall, boasting a diameter of 1.2 kilometers, enclosing the heart of the Kakatiya kingdom’s heritage.

The Impregnable Granite Wall
In an era when forts were breached using elephants and cannons, the innermost circular wall of Warangal Fort stood nearly impregnable. It featured long granite beams, stacked in a stepped formation, lining the wall from base to its towering 29-foot top. These massive beams, each weighing between 8 to 10 tonnes, provided immense strength while offering easy access to the top for soldiers during sieges. Additionally, strategically placed water bodies within the fort precinct added to its defensive advantages.
Scattered Treasures Within
Within the circular fort precinct, two distinct eras coexist. The northern part serves as a lived-in locality, while the middle houses the medieval heritage within the fort’s archaeological park. This is where the ancient Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva temple once stood, marked by four imposing Hamsa Toranas (gateways) at its entrances. These gateways, reminiscent of those at the Sanchi Stupa, are even featured in the Telangana state emblem. The 2-acre archaeological park is adorned with meticulously crafted sculptures, ranging from dancers and lions to gods, elephants, and intricate floral motifs. These sculpted pillars, toranas, and friezes stand as a testament to India’s stone carving excellence.
A Glimpse of the Unscathed Past: Treasures Within the Archaeological Park
As we delve deeper into the annals of history within Warangal’s formidable Warangal Fort, we cannot help but marvel at the remarkable preservation of its treasures within the archaeological park.
These artifacts, standing as stoic witnesses to centuries of tumultuous history, have defied the ravages of time and conflict. As you walk through the hallowed grounds of the 2-acre park, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a tapestry of stories etched in stone.
Sculptures of dancers in intricate poses, majestic lions exuding regal prowess, revered deities frozen in divine grace, and elephants adorned in ornate detail grace this sacred space. Floral motifs and religious offerings, sculpted with unparalleled precision, adorn the pillars, toranas (gateways), and friezes. Their craftsmanship is a testament to the artistic excellence for which India is renowned.

The archaeological park within Warangal Fort is not just a collection of stone artifacts; it’s a living testament to the enduring legacy of the Kakatiya Kingdom. Each piece tells a story, and together, they paint a vivid picture of an era characterized by grandeur, artistry, and military prowess.
